Visited this exhibition at the White Cube, Bermondsey. We’d recently seen, and loved, Baselitz’s sculptures at the Serpentine so it was good to engage with the paintings and drawings. Firstly, he is 86 so I hugely admire how creative and driven he is to create this new body of work. Secondly, I was very taken with the colour palette of pink, peach, purple, yellow tones on grey/blue backgrounds. The deer with blue eyes really standout. Thirdly, in the main, the exhibition displays his upside down paintings. They have been taken for a gimmick by some; Baselitz has said they slow down the process of creating so my understanding is that he paints upside down, not the right way up and then hangs them upside down. On this visit, a man explained to me that if you took a photo on your phone and turned it upside down, you could view them the right way up!! Think he is missing what Baselitz is trying to achieve but I am not sure what that is. On until 16th June.
